Are you ready for Easter? This family holiday is often chock full of events and activities, from special church services to egg hunts to big dinners. One thing that is a constant, though, is the presence of candy.
At Dakota Dental family dentistry, we are excited about Easter and fun times with family – however, we also want to remind our readers that Easter candy should be eaten in moderation. Additionally, beware of the sticky treats!
As parents assemble the Easter baskets and plan for trays of treats to set out, the Dakota Dental Apple Valley dentists suggest substituting all the sugary treats like jelly beans and marshmallow peeps with prizes and activities. Choices like coloring books, puzzles, small toys, craft kits, and even toothpaste and toothbrush make great fillers for Easter baskets. Parents can also include pieces of fruit in the basket to add color and variety. A few pieces of candy can then be scattered around the basket rather than play a starring role.
When selecting the candy to include, say “no” to the sticky treats and choose chocolate, sugar-free chewing gum, and trail mix instead. Though these may be sweet, they do not have the staying power that super sticky candies do. It is that “staying power” which enables bacteria to produce plaque and create cavities to a greater degree.
This Easter, the Dakota Dental children’s dental services team encourages choosing healthy treats to fill those baskets. Otherwise, baskets may not be the only things being filled. Kids and adults may find themselves in need of cavity fillings!
