In May 2012, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) released a data brief about the oral health of Americans. By examining the numbers of treated and untreated cavities and the number of cases of tooth loss between 2005 and 2008, researchers determined the current status of oral health in the United States.
The researchers found that there are fewer cavities in the nation. Further, tooth loss has declined due, in part, to an improvement in patient attitudes, dental procedures, and prevention tools such as sealants. Though the study did indicate a positive trend with fewer cavities in the United States overall, it also uncovered a problem. Attitudes about and access to dental care for those living in poverty and for those of different ethnicities need to change. Dakota Dental is responsive and ready to help.
