What Causes Cold Sores and How Do I Get Rid of Them?

May 22, 2015Dakota DentalDental Tips

Help Prevent Cold SoresIf you have never had a cold sore, it is likely that you have known someone who has. They are the unsightly blisters that appear on or around mouths and last for two or three weeks. So, what is a cold sore and what causes it?

Cold sores, also called fever blisters, are the result of an internal virus known as herpes simplex. It is a highly contagious virus and can be easily transferred from an infected person to a non-infected person by kissing, sharing eating utensils, or using a common towel. Unfortunately, there is currently no cure for the herpes virus that causes cold sores.

Once a person has contracted the herpes simplex virus, they will experience a painful outbreak of sores. Afterward, the virus will lie dormant until conditions trigger an active phase. These triggers can include an illness, too much sun exposure, hormone fluctuations, or even stress.

When a flare up occurs, the upcoming sore will cause tingling, itching, and burning sensations in the spot where the sore will appear. The fluid-filled sore will eventually appear, burst, and crust over.

Luckily, there are ways to reduce the length of cold sore flare-ups, and the family dentists at Dakota Dental are happy to make recommendations. Well versed in diagnosing and treating dental health issues including cold sores, the Dakota Dental specialists know of effective prescription and over-the-counter solutions to relieve cold sore discomfort.
