Whether you want to cover up discoloration, fix minor chips, or create a more uniform appearance, veneers can be an effective solution! But what exactly goes into getting them? Let’s walk through the veneer process step by step so you can know what to expect as you embark on a new smile.

The Veneer Process: Step By Step
Appointment #1
- Initial Consultation. During this appointment, our dentist will discuss why you’re interested in veneers and check that this dental solution is the right option for you. This is the time to ask questions about the process, costs, and results—anything on your mind!
- Planning Your Treatment. After the consultation, we’ll create your treatment plan. Our team will determine the best veneer shape, size, and color to complement your facial features and meet your desired outcome.
Appointment #2
- Preparing Your Teeth. Before we can apply the veneers, we remove a very small amount of enamel, about 0.5 millimeters. This step ensures the veneers fit —we don’t want to make your teeth look bulky. In some cases, we use local anesthesia to keep you comfortable during this part of the process, but we’ll discuss that beforehand so you know what to expect.
- Taking Impressions. Now that the enamel has been removed, it’s time for us to take impressions of your teeth so we can craft your custom veneers. This is an important step in the porcelain veneer process and takes about 1-2 weeks. In the meantime, we’ll send you home with temporary veneers to protect your teeth.
Appointment #3
- Veneer Placement. When your custom veneers are ready, you’ll come back in for placement. First, we’ll check the fit and color of the veneers. Then, we bond them to your teeth using a special adhesive, carefully positioning each one. Finally, we use a curing light to harden the adhesive, securing it in place.
- Final Adjustments. With the bonded veneers, we’ll make any necessary final adjustments to ensure your bite is comfortable and looks natural, potentially trimming the veneers slightly or polishing them for a perfect finish. Your dentist will also check that your new smile aligns with your facial features.
Appointment #4 (If Necessary)
- Follow-Up Appointment. A follow-up appointment is usually scheduled a few weeks later. We’ll check the fit, assess your bite, and make sure that you’re happy with the results. This is the perfect time to discuss any concerns or ask questions about caring for your new veneers.
How Long is the Veneer Process?
The entire veneer process typically spans 2 to 4 weeks, depending on your case.
Composite Veneer Process vs Porcelain Veneer Process: Key Differences
Here are a few differences between composite veneer and porcelain processes.
- Composite Veneers are Faster. Composite veneers can often be completed in a single visit because they’re sculpted right on your teeth. Porcelain veneers can take longer because we make them in a lab.
- Composite Veneers Are More Cost-Effective. Composite veneers are generally less expensive than porcelain veneers, but porcelain offers a more natural appearance and longer-lasting results.
- Porcelain Veneers are More Stain-Resistant and Durable. Porcelain veneers are more durable and resistant to staining than composite veneers. However, composite veneers are easier to repair if damaged.
Choosing between different veneer options comes down to your needs, budget, and desired results. During your initial consultation, we can recommend which direction will be best!
Caring for Your Veneers
Veneer maintenance is simple but essential. Here are a few tips we recommend to patients:
- Keep up with regular brushing, flossing, and dental check-ups.
- Avoid biting into hard objects.
- Be mindful of foods that could stain your veneers, like coffee, tea, or red wine.
