How to Take Care of Teeth While Traveling

December 14, 2021Dakota DentalDental Tips

It’s the most wonderful time of the year…to hit the road and visit loved ones! But while you’re traveling, it’s important that you don’t forget about your teeth. You’ve taken such good care of them all year—don’t stop now. Our travel tips will help you keep those pearly whites in tip-top shape, no matter which state you’re in.

Top 7 Traveling Dental Tips from Dakota Dental

Buy a Travel Toothbrush and Travel Toothpaste

Having a separate traveling dental hygiene kit keeps you organized for your trip. Your kit should

include a travel toothbrush, toothpaste, mouthwash, and floss.

You’ll also want a toothbrush holder with ventilation! If your toothbrush is stored without air, it’s likely to start growing bacteria.

Double Check Airline Limitations for Travel Toothpaste and Mouthwash

If you’re planning to fly, your toothpaste and mouthwash need to be 3.4 ounces or less to comply with the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) limitations. If you’re using the recommended amount, your travel toothpaste should last 9-10 brushes.

Double check TSA requirements by visiting this site or downloading their app!

Pack an Extra

You really can never have too many toothbrushes. Pack one in your purse and another in your checked luggage so that you always have one handy. This also means you have one in the unlikely event your luggage doesn’t arrive with you to your final destination.

Keep Your Dental Hygiene Kit Handy

After a long drive or flight you’re not going to want to dig through your luggage for your toothbrush. Make sure your kit(s) are packed right on top, or in a very visible place so you stick to your routine after an exhausting travel day.

Only Use Water You Would Drink

If you are traveling somewhere with undrinkable tap water, do not use that water to brush your teeth! Opt instead for bottled water or filtered options. After all, that water is going into your mouth—we want it to be safe for you.

Make an Appointment Before or After Your Trip

Making sure your teeth are in good condition before or after you travel helps you stay on top of your dental care even during a busy time. Whether it’s been six months or a couple of years since your last appointment, the team at Dakota Dental is ready to thoroughly examine and clean your chompers.

Stick to Your Routine

Being in a new place with different people can throw us off of all of our routines. While now is the time to throw the calendar out the window, brushing and flossing are two things you shouldn’t skip. Make a commitment to yourself that you’ll brush two times a day, for 2 minutes each. Don’t worry, your family will wait for you.

Let’s Keep Your Teeth Sparklingly Clean

Prioritizing your dental health is one of the best things you can do for your overall well-being. Follow these traveling dental tips and your teeth will continue to be strong and healthy over the holidays. And be sure to stop in for an appointment at Dakota Dental. Schedule online or give us a call at (952) 431-5774. We look forward to seeing you soon.

From all of us at Dakota Dental – Happy Holidays!
