It’s not just Halloween night that has your mouth in cavity fright! Sugary snacks can haunt your teeth well past Halloween. Dakota Dental has some tricks to keep Halloween treats from causing tooth decay.
The influx of Halloween treats is a great time to teach kids the importance of monitoring their candy intake and making healthy choices. One way to make sure kids (and parents!) don’t overindulge is to limit the amount of candy and chocolate that comes into the house. Either give children a smaller bag to fill with candy as they go house to house, or set a limit on the number of houses your family visits. It’s also important to limit the amount of candy your kids have each day – allow them to pick one or two pieces per day, or save them for weekends or rewards.
To prevent those sweet treats from causing cavities on teeth, use Halloween as a great opportunity to reinforce healthy teeth habits like proper brushing and flossing techniques. Consistent brushing will help remove plaque buildup from all of the sugary candies and chocolates they’re eating. Flossing is just as important to remove the candy and caramel that can easily get stuck in between teeth.
