Stay Alert to Cold-Sensitive Teeth

October 23, 2014Dakota DentalDental Tips
Tooth Sensitive to Cold

If you have a tooth sensitive to cold weather, be alert!

In Minnesota, it is important to pay attention to the cold temperatures in winter. Within a matter of minutes on some days, it is possible to experience frostbite and even hypothermia. Beyond skin and body temperature issues, the cold can also hurt your teeth.

With the coming cold weather, Dakota Dental believes now is a good time to discuss cold sensitivity and oral health. If breathing out causes steam, breathing in may cause pain from that jolt of icy air. If you have a tooth sensitive to cold, it may be a sign of a problem.

There are several common reasons for tooth sensitivity. The most common is root exposure caused by receding gums or eroding enamel. This exposed root can happen because of gum damage or periodontal disease, overusing tooth-whitening products, tooth grinding and clenching, or even brushing too hard. Other reasons for tooth sensitivity include sinus or gum infection, cracked teeth, or defective tooth fillings, crowns, or bridges.

If tooth sensitivity lasts only a day or so, then it is probably nothing too serious. Just be sure to mention it to your dentist at your next cleaning and check up. However, if the sensitivity to cold lasts longer than three days, it is time to schedule an appointment with your Dakota Dental dentist.

At Dakota Dental, the dental services team is very experienced in diagnosing and treating cold-sensitive teeth. Once the cause is identified, treatment can begin. Treatment may be as simple as suggesting the use of specialized toothpaste or more complex like replacing a damaged tooth crown.

Contact Dakota Dental to discuss cold-sensitive teeth today – before the severe cold weather sets in. Our team of caring professionals is ready to assist you in taking care of your teeth with excellent preventive dental care.
