Protect Your Smile by Watching What You Eat

Maintain Good Oral Health with These Tips

You are what you eat, says the old adage. We know good nutrition is important for our bodies. At Dakota Dental, we also believe good nutrition is important for teeth, gums, and oral health in general.

Because digestion begins in the mouth, it is important to consider what goes in it. Nearly everyone knows that sugar is the enemy of a healthy mouth and perfect smile. But a reminder is worth repeating: limit the intake of carbohydrate rich or sugary drinks and food and carbonated beverages. Sticky, chewy candies? Just say no. Coffee, tea, wine, and sports drinks? Try to keep consumption low.

Sugars, simple carbohydrate foods (breads, chips, crackers, etc), and carbonation are harmful to teeth and gum health. When taken into the mouth, they lead to the breakdown of enamel, increased bacteria activity, plaque buildup, and cavities and gum infection. Beverages such as coffee and wine can lead to teeth staining, and the acids can also contribute to decay of teeth.

Taking care of your teeth is essential. In addition to knowing how to clean your teeth, Dakota Dental believes it is important to know what to put in your mouth.

The Apple Valley dentists at Dakota Dental suggest choosing foods and drinks that are beneficial to oral health. Good choices include foods high in protein, calcium, and fiber. Calcium and protein help to remineralize the teeth while fiber helps to scrub them. In addition, fluoridated drinking water helps strengthen teeth surfaces and sugar-free gum impedes the growth of harmful bacteria.

Dakota Dental Apple Valley dental care is pleased to provide information that promotes dental awareness and good oral health. We invite you to schedule an appointment with one of our professionals to learn more about dental health issues and preventive dental care.
