The Pros and Cons of Dental Veneers

August 10, 2021Dakota DentalDental Tips

If you’ve ever wondered “should I get veneers”, you may already know it’s a big decision! Since they become a permanent addition to your smile, it’s crucial to learn what dental veneers actually entail. Today, let’s break down the pros and cons of this dental procedure as you decide if it’s the right decision for you!

What Are Veneers?

Veneers are a thin, permanent covering placed over the visible side of the tooth, typically made from composite resin or porcelain (American Dental Association). They’re used to mask discoloration, misalignments, crowding, chips, or gaps between teeth, while giving you a gorgeously white smile.

The Pros of Dental Veneers

  • Fix Your Smile. This one is pretty obvious: the main reason to get veneers is to boost your smile confidence. With veneers, you can fix minor cosmetic issues and make your smile whiter!
  • A Natural Feel. Because they’re sculpted to your teeth, once your veneers are applied, they won’t be noticeable to you or to those around you! They’ll look and feel just like your real teeth.
  • Long Lasting & Low Maintenance. On average, veneers last up to 10 years before needing to be replaced. During that time, all that’s required for upkeep is the traditional oral hygiene routine: brush twice a day and floss once.

The Cons of Dental Veneers

  • Cost. We hate to break it to you — the dental veneers cost can be relatively high. If you have dental insurance, check to see if this procedure is covered.
  • Increased Sensitivity. After your veneers are applied, you may experience increased tooth sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures (American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry). Typically, this diminishes after a couple of days.
  • It’s a Commitment. Because enamel is removed and shaved down to apply dental veneers, this procedure is irreversible. So, once you complete this process, you cannot revert back to your original teeth.

Am I a Good Candidate for Dental Veneers?

That depends! Our biggest warning: while dental veneers can accomplish a lot, that doesn’t mean they’re indestructible. If you have a habit of clenching or grinding your teeth, veneers might not be the best option for you. If you do decide to get veneers, maybe skip chewing on that ice or indulging in too many toffees.

How Many Visits Does This Procedure Entail?

When you visit Dakota Dental, we make it simple:

At the first appointment, we take a look at your teeth, diagnose what’s going on, answer your questions, and create a plan.

For you second appointment, we’ll take a mold of your mouth and get your veneers ready.

At the final appointment, veneers are applied and voilà! Time to flash your sparkling new smile.

Talk to Your Dentist

Before you make such an important decision, talk to your dentist about your individual expectations, circumstances, and desires. At Dakota Dental, we’re well-versed in both dental veneers and bonding and are here to answer questions big and small. Want to learn more or begin the process?
