Prevent Painful Brushing or Bleeding Gums with These Tips from Dakota Dental

Prevent Gum Irritation with These Tips

Is there blood in the sink or on your toothbrush after you clean your teeth? If it happens once in a while, that can be perfectly normal. However, if it is a regular occurrence, it might be a good idea to have your family dentists take a look.

At Dakota Dental, assessing gum health is a normal part of a routine check up. When our Apple Valley dentists see firm pink tissue around the teeth, it is likely the gums are healthy. However, if the gums are bleeding, swollen, or bright red, it is important to find the underlying cause.

There are numerous reasons why gums may bleed. Some issues are simply uncomfortable and easily remedied, but it is vital to speak with your dentist about the potential for something more serious.

Most cases of bleeding gums are caused by poor oral hygiene. It takes eating a balanced diet, brushing twice a day, and flossing at least once a day to keep gums healthy. Though pregnancy and other hormone changes increase blood flow to the gums and may cause bleeding, more often this is a sign of poor hygiene and can cause gum infection or inflamed gums (gingivitis) that can lead to periodontal disease and even tooth loss.

To prevent the bleeding and pain associated with gum irritation, Dakota Dental recommends using a soft toothbrush and brushing up and down or in small circles. If gingivitis is detected at a routine oral health check, the dentists will suggest options for gum disease treatment.

Schedule a preventive dental care appointment today at Dakota Dental to avoid or to treat painful or bleeding gums. Call 952-431-5774 or request an appointment online at www.dakotadental.com.
