Preparing for the Winter Cold by Desensitizing Sensitive Teeth

December 2, 2016Dakota DentalDental Tips

Cold weather, cold hands, cold cars, and cold floors – winter is definitely here! But what about cold teeth? If you have sensitive teeth, you’re not alone. In fact, over 40 million Americans experience tooth sensitivity from time to time. If you’ve ever had discomfort or pain when having hot or cold foods, you may have experienced sensitive teeth.

What is that makes teeth sensitive to hot or cold food and beverages? While several things can contribute to tooth sensitivity, the central cause is the wearing away of enamel on the teeth. The hard layer of enamel on the tooth protects the teeth’s nerve endings; so when the enamel thins or wears away, nerves are more exposed and therefore more sensitive to hot and cold foods.

There are several different bad dental habits that people develop that can wear away tooth enamel. For instance, using tough bristles and brushing too aggressively can thin enamel over time. Consuming large amounts of acidic foods and drinks can also damage enamel. Gingivitis and tooth decay are common culprits of sensitive teeth and grinding your teeth can also wear away enamel.

If you have a tooth sensitive to cold, there are ways to help control those sensitive teeth. One of the best ways to take care of your teeth is by brushing and flossing regularly. Just make sure that toothbrush bristles aren’t too stiff and you aren’t brushing too hard!  Using a toothpaste especially for sensitive teeth can help reduce sensitivity symptoms as well. If you grind your teeth, getting a mouth guard to wear at night can help reduce enamel wear.

Finally, schedule an appointment with the family dentists at Dakota Dental. The dentists at Dakota Dental can recommend preventive dental care tips to reduce tooth sensitivity and let you know if there are any dental procedures that may help severe cases of sensitivity.

So if hot cocoa is hurting your teeth this winter season, give Dakota Dental a call to find the right way to treat sensitive teeth!
