Is Sedation Dentistry Right for You?

May 31, 2018Dakota DentalDental Tips, Our Clinic

When it comes to sedation dentistry, many people may think it’s just for patients undergoing procedures like a root canal, dental implant or tooth extraction. But really, sedation dentistry is a useful option for patients that may need other dental services or just have anxiety about going to the dentist.

Some of the reasons patients might want sedation dentistry would be if:

  • Patients are afraid of needles and shots
  • Patients have had a negative dental experience in the past
  • Patients have a sensitive gag reflex
  • Patients need major dental restoration, and they have anxiety about it

Sedation dentistry has several levels of sedation: minimal, moderate, deep, and general anesthesia. Minimal sedation is where the patient is awake, but relaxed. With moderate sedation, or “conscious sedation,” patients may slur their words when talking or may not remember much of the procedure. Deep sedation means that patients are almost unconscious, but could still be awakened, and general anesthesia is when patients are completely unconscious.

Depending on the procedure and the patient’s level of anxiety, they can work with their dentist to find the best option. The family dentists at Dakota Dental offer sedation to adults as well as pediatric sedation for children. Dakota Dental provides resources to kids and parents in an effort to educate children about the dentist and reduce their fears, but in some cases sedation may be a good choice. For instance, pediatric sedation might be recommended for small children who are too nervous or unable to sit still for a dental procedure.

Dakota Dental is committed to making sure families feel at ease in their office, and want patients to have a healthy smile. For more information about the different types of sedation or to determine if you should consider sedation dentistry at your next appointment, contact Dakota Dental today!
