Heading back to school means getting out backpacks, purchasing new clothes, and stocking up on school supplies. It’s about dusting off books and brushing up on what was learned the previous year. But it’s also an important time to brush up on the basics of taking care of your teeth as well! Sometimes with the summer chaos of camps, vacations, and different schedules, people’s oral health routines are thrown off. With the start of school and new schedules, now’s a great time to get back to basics and make sure you have a healthy smile!
Most everybody knows that it’s important to brush your teeth and you should be brushing twice a day. But there are some techniques and tips to keep in mind as well. For instance, make sure “when you brush, don’t rush” and take time to do a thorough job. You don’t need to brush hard – hold your toothbrush at a slight angle and gently brush, using short back-and-forth motions. Make sure to get every tooth!
It’s also important to replace your toothbrush every three to four months – even sooner if the bristles are frayed. And make sure to rinse your toothbrush off after every use, storing it upright and allowing it to air-dry.
Daily flossing is also important, and only takes a few minutes each day. Flossing reduces the chance of gingivitis and tooth decay by strengthening gums and reducing plaque buildup. Gently floss between teeth, and make sure to get in between every tooth.
