Don’t Forget a Key Part of the Mouth: The Tongue

Avoid Oral Health Problems!

Halitosis. Bad breath. Whichever name you use, the result is the same. It stinks!

It may seem impossible to get rid of smelly breath. Often people resort to mouth rinses, breath mints, or even gum. Yet, these do not provide a permanent solution. They only mask the real issue: poor oral health.

Dakota Dental knows taking care of your teeth with good preventive dental care habits is essential to maintaining healthy teeth and a perfect smile. Brushing removes harmful bacteria that, if left alone, could cause gingivitis or cavities.

However, if you do not take care of the tongue, bacteria from the tongue will multiply and transfer to the teeth. Further, the bacteria on the tongue is smelly.

If you have bad breath, check out your tongue. It might be the cause of the odor. Eliminate the smell and fix oral health problems by adding a step to your tooth brushing routine: tongue cleaning.

At Dakota Dental, we believe there are two very effective ways to deal with the bacteria on the tongue. These include brushing and scraping.

Tongue brushing does not require any special equipment. Simply stick out your tongue and carefully brush across it with your toothbrush – including the very back of the tongue. This will loosen the whitish film of food debris and bacteria. Then, rinse very well.

For those with a strong gag reflex, Dakota Dental recommends tongue scraping. To scrape the tongue, use the bowl of a small spoon placed on the back of the tongue and draw it forward and rinse. Or, purchase a tongue scraper wherever you purchase your dental care products – such as Dakota Dental, where tongue scrapers are available for purchase.

For recommendations on improving oral health and choosing good oral health products, contact Dakota Dental at www.DakotaDental.com or 952-431-5774.
