Earlier this month, Dr. Shelley Wakefield and Dr. Bennett Isabella, your Dakota Dental dentists, appeared on the KARE 11 Sunrise television program to discuss the Give Kids a Smile campaign.
Give Kids a Smile is a national program to provide children under 18 years old with the dental care they need at no cost to their families. Held February 1 and 2, 2013, this nationwide dental services event was launched in 2003, making this the 10th year dentists have helped young people receive preventative and remedial treatments such as cleanings, fillings, and sealants.
In addition to the treatment aspect of the program, the two-day event is also intended to raise awareness among politicians, teachers, parents, and those who care about children. According to Dr. Wakefield, children’s oral care must be a priority in Minnesota and across the United States.
Children who do not receive the dental care they need, including regular cleaning and exams as well as exposure to fluoride and sealants, may suffer from poor systemic health, emotional well-being, and social development. Additionally, young people who experience the pain of mouth infections and cavities do not eat well, sleep well, or focus in school well.
Apple Valley Dentists, Dr. Wakefield and Dr. Isabella and the dental services team at Dakota Dental have special places in their hearts for these children who, for one reason or another, do not have adequate, regular dental care. That is why they are so committed to programs such as Give Kids a Smile. They also make themselves available for educational visits to schools, civic groups, and youth groups to discuss the importance of taking care of teeth and gums—especially from a young age.
