Happy New Year! It is time to make resolutions for 2015, and Dakota Dental recommends adding dental preventive care to your list. Taking care of your teeth demands making oral health care a priority, but the results of pampering your pearly whites are worth it.
Teeth were made for talking, biting, chewing, and eating, so using teeth for non-eating purposes is asking for trouble. Three of the big bad habits that destroy teeth quickly include chewing ice, treating teeth like tools, and chomping on inedible objects.
Chewing on ice may seem like a harmless activity. After all, ice has no calories and no sugar – but that doesn’t make it a healthful habit. In actuality, chewing on ice can be very damaging. When you consider the fact that even blenders with sharp blades have trouble crushing ice, it is no wonder that ice cubes damage teeth. The cold temperatures and hardness of ice cubes can cause a cracked or chipped tooth, and damaged tooth surfaces and structures can lead to chronic toothache.
The second bad habit Dakota Dental suggests dropping is treating teeth like tools. Unless you want to invest in restorative dental work, do not use your teeth to open packages, remove bottle caps, break off tags, or any other activity not pertaining to biting or chewing food. These types of activities are likely to cause chipping and cracking.
Finally, the third bad oral health habit to leave behind is biting and chewing on inedible objects. From biting fingernails to chewing on a pencil, any activity involving biting down on non-food objects can cause teeth to shift out of place or to crack and chip. Chomping on inedible objects can also cause damage to dental work already in place.
